Hey all I'm GREEN to true bbq and smoking but have been lucky so far. I'm using a gas multi burner grill with a smoke box over one burner. BUT I have a large upright freezer that I'm going to convert. Looking forward to finishing the project:). But in the mean time, what is the best store-bought wood to buy for smoking? I have the small chips but want chunks

  2. Hello klowse and welcome to the fun.  Many good folk here with a load of experience that they are more than willing to share.  If you have specific questions just start a thread and someone with experience will be along soon to offer advice.  All info you can provide us with such as smoker type, location and so on will help us answer any questions you may have.  Spend some time doing some research on the forums, tons of advice and recipes already available there.  Most bought brands work pretty well.  As for which wood to use, that's personal preference and is also based on what you are smoking.  For beef try oak.  For poultry try apple.  That is just a place to start.  Experiment and find what you like. We look forward to your contributions. Have fun. Good luck. Keep Smokin!

Welcome aboard! You'll find that this is a great place to share ideas on smoking, grilling, etc. There are plenty of folks here who genuinely enjoy helping one another. Looking forward to your input, and just ask when you need anything...someone here will surely have the answer.

Good luck with your fridge build project!  As for woods...hickory, apple, pecan, mesquite, cherry...these are all good, depending on what you're smoking.

Welcome from a fellow Montanan! If you have a "Do It Best" hardware store in your area you can order whatever type of wood you want online and have it shipped to store for free. It is the only way to get pecan around here (my favorite). You will likely find hickory or cherry on the shelves (big chunks). Harder to find apple in big chunks at the store, but depending on where you are at in MT you should be able to find a fruit tree that needs pruning, start now for next years supply, it needs to be seasoned. The best wood is all based on personal preference, try anything you can get your hands on and develop your favorites list.

    Have fun!

Glad you joined us klowse, :welcome1: from North Dakota!
Wood flavor is all a matter of preference, I like every flavor I have tried with the exception of mesquite... but that is just me.

Thanks for the big welcome everyone! I'm in the heart of Montana and hoping to bring the smoke flavor to my friends and family In this area tomorrow. I'm smoking 20+ lbs of pork roast tomorrow for the cat/ griz game tomorrow. ( it's a huge college football rivalry here:). First time on a borrowed gas smoker with a new to me rub. Using mesquite and an apple juice spritz. My grandma as ways said," Go big or go home." So that's what I'm doing. Nervous but excited.. I'll get some pic so here if I can figure out how:)

It really sucks up here right now.  As we speak, I'm stuck in my driveway in about 2 feet of snow.  Waiting for my wife to get back from BC with the 4x4 to pull me out
