So, the new WSM is getting it's first workout this weekend and also going to try the minion method for the first time. I have read up and can't seem to find the answer to one question. I am anticipating this to be a 4 - 6 hour smoke and am using Kingsford briquettes with cherry and hickory chunks. I see for that time frame, it is suggested to use 1/2 a ring full but I'm curious what is meant by that. Do I fill one side full to the top or do I fill the entire ring but only 1/2 full? Or does it matter? Thanks and will post Q-View on Saturday throughout.

I take those instructions to mean:  Fill the entire ring, but only half way up the sides toward the top of the ring.

That is how I do it...I hope this helps.

Good Luck with the new smoker...You will love it!  John

When I'm smoking something for 4-6 hours (hardly anything gets done that quickly though) I make a horseshoe shape around the outside of the ring. Then  simply light one end and let it burn around the ring. Mix wood chunks throughout.

For long smokes I do it like this.......

Thanks for your replies. I'll probably give it a try by filling it halfway up the sides this time around and see what happens...it's all about trial and error is definitely one thing I've learned time and time again.
