MES too much air?

Anybody have a problem with a the MES getting too much air?  

I live in a condo community and unfortunately the only place I have to fire up my MES is just off of a lake. I think the wide open area allows too much wind to build up and forces to much air into bottom vent.  Too much air which is causing more white/gray smoke then TBS.  

I wondering if anyone has tried covering up some of the vent holes in the chip loader? Or any other suggestions?  (I know I know get an AMNPS. Trying to use up my stock pile of wood chips before)

Right now I'm trying to a piece of wood to try and block as much wind as possible but still have enough room for some air to get in.  

Im getting great results no matter what so maybe i'm just too picky.

Are you sure it's not the wind sucking air from the top vent??

I run my top vent wide open, unless it's windy---Then I run it about 1/2 open, but it's better yet if you can put up a wind break around the whole MES, or at least around the area of the top vent. Then you can keep the vent wide open all the time.

And you're right---You should get an AMNPS. You can save the chips for the future, or for real short smokes.

I think Bear hit the nail on the head. The air is being pulled out. You could try a piece of duct or a can the same size & put an elbow on the end. Put that over the top vent & point it away from the wind.

I've seen some people put a few inches of PVC pipe over the vent so maybe I'll try that.  Is the pipe size equal to the vent opening? or should I be using a large enough pipe to go over the vent adjusting tab?

Just a stupid question, isn't your exhaust adjustable?

You realize that is basically what the vent is for? To regulate the air flow? Why jury rig the suction instead of using the exhaust as it is meant? If the wind is continiously too high to effectively use the smoker, build a wind break.

When you increase the vent or add a stack, it increases the air flow. A two foot extension on that 3 inch vent will cause your discharge to increase in flow enough to actually equal a 4" dia. vent.
