Disappointed with the amount of smoke time in my MES 40" Electric, I added the cold smoke kit and was more disappointed, It burned a lot of chips but I didn't get much more smoke. 4 Years later a DUH moment came upon me! Heat travels up and so does the smoke right out of the chip holder cap into the top compartment and leaks out. Very little ever got in the Oven chamber. Then it dawned on me to vent the chip cap just below the flange by drilling holes and Wala, Tralalaboomdeaaaa! This thing smokes like a drunken Sailor on Steroids. It smokes too much but I'm on the right track. Burns them in 1 hour, 2 if you soak the chips. Just need a sheet metal sliding damper now to control burning and flow and were in. MES said they would call me but didn't so I know there are others out there that just want the cold smoke kit to work. Well here's  your answer. Cheers, The Tshirtmeister!

If you separate the cold smoker from the smoker with a piece of stovepipe it will clean the smoke.

With all that white smoke you going to get a creosote taste.

Here is the setup I use.

I'm cold smoking bacon here.

I normally am smoking ribs or tri-tip so I wanted more smoke. It smokes now. I will figure how to choke it down some. If I leave the chip cap off very long she flames up. So I just spritz a little aqua down there. I can't do the pipe as it will block a walkway. I have two smokers maybe on the other one I can locate so I can use a pipe for cold smoking. You should try drilling just a couple small holes you will get more smoke. Drill one hole at a time until you get the desired amount of smoke. PK

The other benefit to this mod is I'm getting heat into the oven from the chips and external heater, so my element in the oven is coming on less. Temp is holding good. Cant beat this thing, I got a 40"  version 1 for $179 new and free ship too. I have a gen 2 also. Needs a new element then I may try the pipe.
