MES  40, Can I Use It The Way It Is Without The Updated Chip Tray? I should be getting it tomorrow and kinda wanna try some ribs? Will i be disappointed in its ability if i use it for the first time just the way it is until i get the update kit from masterbuilt warranty?

No, you don't have to wait for the larger chip tray. Follow the directions for seasoning the unit when you pull it out of the box and ENJOY!

Not to talk you out of getting the upgrade kit (since it is free) but the small chip tray does work pretty well for hot smoking (at 225 degrees or so). It becomes more of a problem at lower temperatures. You can also consider modifiying the existing small tray assembly by removing the extra piece of metal between the chip tray and element. I did that on my MES40 and it works better at lower smoker temperatures. The below link describes this mod.

I use the AMNPS mostly but it is good to have the chip tray working well for the occasions when it is just easier to use for short smokes or to smoke a different type of wood concurrent with the type of wood in the AMNPS
