Meat Thermometer ideas?

  1. When using a remote probe thermometer, can I leave the probe in my meat while it smokes in my wood smoker or will the lid crush the wire? My sister uses one on Thanksgiving on her turkey, but a smokers lid and an oven door are way different, right?

    i use aluminum foil wrapped around my probe wire where it goes under the smoker lid.
  3. Does that protect the wire from heat and crushing by the lid?

    I drilled a hole in the side of the smoker for the wire to run in. Maybe run it through a vent if possible

    It would depend on how tightly your door closes. I would try a piece of insulated copper the same size first and see what happens to that. Still, drilling a hole would be the sure fire way to prevent an issue.

    I have a GOSM and the door really doesn't shut tight tight it is still alittle room. I guess the door latch isn't tight so it has some jiggle room. But I would drill a hole in he side of your smoker like piney and the others said.

    I drilled a hole in mine for the probe.
  10. Yea drill a hole, or use a vent. Thats what I do when I use my little smoker.

    I run mine thru the vent hole with good success

    I also drilled a couple holes, but I tapped them and use a 1/4" plug in the hole when not in use.

    I run my probes down through the vent on my MES, and I just let them get squeezed in the rubber seal of my fridge when using them in the fridge.
    I also put my Maverick meat probe in a bottle of water in the fridge---IT DOESN"T HURT IT !
    I think maybe the instructions mean don't soak the probe in water all the way to the wire.
