Mav probes, can I use them to check soil temps?

Random question.  Im worried the metal tips will get damaged if forced into the ground (rocks etc).  Has anyone tried this.  Is it ok to do?  Where is the actual sensor in the probe?  Buried in the metal?
 
I'm sure it'll be fine providing you keep the back end clear of water/mud etc. If anything gets in it could kill the probes accuracy. So if it's likely to rain then a definite no

I don't understand what it is about the soil temp of your lawn that would lead you to use a thermometer to check it. It should be well above freezing in Mass. for a while yet.
