I finally decided on which smoker to buy, ordered it from Cabela's as it's not possible to get one on the island as far as I know, anyway it arrived today, model #20071914 just in time too, because the mackerel are in and I was hoping to get a big batch smoked this week, so I assembled it and fired it up to pre-season the beast!!......it reached about 189 F then shut down..so I did as the book said and reset it, fired it up again with the same result, I decided to watch it for a while and sure enough as it reached ALMOST the selected temp it trips out!!.

After half a dozen attempts I decided to call Masterbuilt, they were very helpful they told me they would send me another control panel BUT there's a 3 week back order waiting time....

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I might try to get it working?, I have about 100 lbs of mackerel that I've had to freeze, I hope they will smoke up OK after a while in the freezer, Darn the season is so short too!!.

Thanks All

If there is a 3 week back order them you might not be the only one with this problem. I guess you will just have to wait. The fish should be fine after thawing.

Yes I suppose you're correct Old serge, I thought l'd ask because I'm sure I read a review on this smoker where a guy had the same problem, If I remember right he managed to get the thing working by setting the temp up in stages?, I've not had any success trying this yet, if I set 200 f the power trips out just as the temp is reached, then I can't select anything after that it's totally dead!!.

Have you tried returning it to Cabella's as a dead on arrival?  Maybe they will pay for the return.

I bought a bunch of stuff from Cabela's on the order, 3 boxes arrived with the invoices which has a "return" tag attached on the bottom so it's a simple enough process to send things back to them..BUT the smoker was in it's original packaging and NO invoice was attached, I called them straight away and they are sending me an invoice.

However yesterday I decided to try the smoker again so I fired it up and increased the temp 50 deg at a time, it cut out just once and eventually made it to 275F, so I managed to finish the pre-seasoning process, of course I will change the control unit when it arrives but for now I really want to smoke a bunch of mackerel while they're fresh.

Our cod season opens on Saturday, we have only 10 days in the fall to stock the freezer, but there are some huge fish around this year, I remember in the UK we used to be able to buy smoked cod and it was very tasty, I know it's a white flaky fish so I hope it wont dry out in the smoker too much,  has anyone tried smoking cod?, I was thinking of using oak, any thoughts?.
