Masterbuilt Pro dual troubleshooting

Discussion in 'Propane Smokers' started by piers, Oct 21, 2012.

  1. Hi folks,

I'm new to smokers and was recently gifted a Masterbuilt Pro dual smoker.  I seasoned the smoker this morning for just under an hour and was able to get the heat up to 400 deg during the seasoning time.

I then proceeded to start up a pork butt in the smoker and for the life of me I can't get the heat to go above 200 deg.  I notice that when I adjust the control knob that there's a brief flare up but it quickly goes back down to its steady burn.  This is case whether I have it at max or min.

Working with the equipment is new to me.  I don't know the in's and out's of working with the heat system other than what the manual provided.  What else in terms of troubleshooting can I investigate as to why I can't get better heat control before I call up Masterbuilt and troubleshoot with them directly?

    Thanks in advance.

Not sure if it's a permanent resolution but I simply turned everything off and re-sparked the burner.  After doing so I had better control over the fuel supply and easily got it heated past 200 deg.

Piers, morning and welcome to the forum.....    The propane tank valves, on today's tanks, has a built in safety device....  this device turns the propane down to a trickle if the tank valve is turned on and the device it is hooked to has the gas valve open...  Keep the device valve closed and open the tank valve VERY, VERY slowly to disable the safety device...  It was incorporated into the valve so you could not have open gas flow without something hooked to the tank....   Dave
  3. Thanks Dave!  That's very useful information to know and will save me from future frustration when I do up the brisket I've got planned for this next weekend.

Glad you got it working Piers, how did the butt turn out?

When you get a minute would you swing by "Roll Call" and introduce yourself so we can give you a warm SMF welcome, Thanks!
