Maple is Maple is Maple???

Hey fellow smokers....Recently sold one house and bought another...LOTS of Maple around here as you can see in the pics.

Question - the red one that looks like a huge bush is a Japanese Maple (per the former homeowner). It has been maintained as a bush and has a pretty thick trunk/structure; not sure if this could be transplanted by an interested parry due to proximity to driveway/sidewalk.

The mayor/judge/police captain/jury/ordinance officer and code inspector at my house doesn't like it and I'm not crazy about it because I hate trimming bushes.

So the question are- can this be cut, dried, and used in the smoker? Are these a sweeter flavor like other maples?

I've come across very little info on this, especially about flavor.

That Japanese Maple is a little big. Can't you just cut it down some? Those are nice little trees.

Those Maples going down along the street look like Crimson King Maples. We're getting two of them next week for on either side of our driveway entrance.

Morning Bear! Think you will like the Crimsons, they are nice trees! We have a lot of Maples where I live and the city maintains the trees between sidewalk and road - they are good about mixing the maples as its a tourist town, have to keep the image!

The Japanese in front of the house is probably 30+ years old, I'm not sure if it would live the amount of trimming it would require to get it more like a small tree than a bush. The trunk and branches are pretty thick. Some of the thick ones go right to the edge and have leaves growing off of them.

Oh yeah---I can see that, and you'd never be able to dig it out to move it without messing up your sidewalk.

We had twin Crimson Kings in our front yard at our last house, and they really are beauties.

We live in the middle of a big woods, but we need a few more closer to the house.

One question, are you SURE it hasn't been treated with any chemicals like insecticides?

Well....we are going to change part of the sidewalk and re-landscape the front-center of the house but i think the driveway would also be in the way of getting the tree out. They are valuable trees, maybe if someone wants it bad enough to pay for it I can use the money to fix the cement.

It would be a lot of wood for my amount of smoking - although now that we are moved I intend to kick it up a bit. But I have a branch to take down on the tree in front of the house as well. Guess I'll be set with maple for a while!

Guess there is a call to a landscaper in my future.
