Anyone have a good source or know of small Mom & Pop places that sell quality Wild Rice? We used to pick up about a two pounds of it, once a year when we visited family in Minnesota.

The BEST rice was the no-name-brand stuff - was rather pricey.. Not the mixed stuff, just wild rice.

It may sound weird, but we're looking for some.

Thanks! No rush - so if you don't make it, it's no problem. [IMG]

A "local" grocery (100+ miles from me, but I may get there this week) has a sale this week on Red Lake brand wild rice, which I'm guessing comes from the Indian reservation by the same name in northern Minnesota. If I do make it there and it's the pure stuff I'll be stocking up myself. How much would you like? Do you want to do an exchange or purchase?

I just buy it at my local grocery store.

I have - the stuff locally isn't very good and costs almost as much as the stuff harvested up north.

Que-ball (Tim) was generous to send me 2#'s when he went into town to pick up some for his family. I look forward to preparing some for the family this weekend! :)

I am a late arrival to this thread, but there is a chain of stores called Trader Joe's that have really good wild rice for pretty cheap. If you have a Trader Joe's by you, or anyone you know, you may want to check it out.

We used to spend out summers in Northern Wisconsin. Once you get a hankering for it, nothing else will do. :)

    Good luck!

Yep, my Dad managed the Co-op store in Orr, MN (population 300). Every fall the local natives would bring in their harvest to weigh it on our platform feed scale. To pay my Dad for letting them do this, they would give Dad a few coffee cans full of the best wild rice you could ever imagine! By the end of ricing, we would have quite the stash of hand processed long grain rice. I grew up eating it a few times a week. We had it for cereal and in hotdishes, we even popped it like popcorn. I still have rice a few times a week. I hope you found a source, if not get in touch with me. It is one of the staples i bring to TX with me for the winter.
