Looking for advice

    I am new to the game I have a ECB and have been reading a bunch of threds, time to by a thermometer. Of course I am wanting the best I can get with out breaking the bank any suggestions? Also I have no idea on placement for the probes to get a accurate reading on cooking temps.

    Another vote here for the Maverick ET-73.

    Yup, this one is the best bang for the buck. I bought two seperate ones for the meat and chamber prior to seeing this one. I just got the ECB Gourmet for home and will buy this one.

    Now, I have a question.....in the ECD there are two racks, which one to take the chamber temp?

    Personally I would check both then you'll know what the difference is between the grates. You could also kind of dangle it between the grates by adjusting how much wire you feed into it

    ditto on the et73... just be gentle with the switches and you will have one great thermo!!! bought mine on ebay 37 bucks. it is not any worse quality than any of the previous brands i have owned and there have been quite a few. except possibly the taylor which however did not have the wireless convenience with the remote reciever. as far as wireless signal have had no problem taking indoors and anywhere in the house and still recieve signal. can go anywheres on my property and still maintain signal. i have gotten out of range just cking to see how far i can get away from the transmitter and the display goes blank so it is obvious that signal has been lost and operator needs to correct.

    I use the maverick et 7. It has two meat probes. I just stick one probe through a small piece of wood to measure grate temps. I installed a thermo in the lid of my Brinkman. Most of the time I use my probes for 2 pieces of meat, because I know my grate temps based on the lid thermo, which I calibrated against the maverick. The ET 7 can only be set to alert you when you go higher than a certain temp. The et 73 can alert you if your cooker goes low, and I assume high also.

    The Maverick is the only wireless digital thermo I've ever used. And unlike almost everyone else, I'm not impressed. It's cheaply built, and the wireless range is not good. According to most reviews I've read, there isn't anything better out there though. Not trying to poop on your parade. But you may want to read reviews of several brands before you buy one.

    ditto on what erain said. a little tlc and they will last mine first one is about 5 years old and still ticking. [​IMG]

    I know this thread is 2 months old, but in case anyone's interested:

    I bought the "Maverick 73" three weeks ago. I tested it right away in my Masterbuilt Smokehouse. It ran between 25 & 35 degrees higher than the digital readout on the smoker. Then when I turned it off, the little on/off switch on the receiver broke off. I called the number (New Jersey)on the owners' paper, and told them. They sent a brand new receiver to me (no charge)& didn't even ask me to send the broken one back.
    Meanwhile I put some water in a pot & brought it to boil. Then I dangled both probes in the boiling water. The one read 211 degrees, and the other read 212 degrees. You can't get much more accurate than that !

    Great accuracy & great service.

    I guess I just ignore the digital readout on the Masterbuilt & go by the Maverick, because I don't see any way to adjust the Masterbuilt's reading.

    I hear everyone talk about thr E-73 so go out and get the thing. Spend the money because it's worth what you pay for.
