The last couple of times I have used my Little Chief for salmon, there is no evidence of smoke. The element works & is up to temp. The chips in the center of the pan are burnt. The fish comes out "cooked" but lack the smoke flavor for lack of smoke. Suggestions?

I have a pair of Little Chiefs that mostly got used for fish and jerky although I haven't used them in a while.  The chips in the pan always charred across the whole bottom of the pan.  I did have a bit of a problem when the bottom of one of the pans warped some and it wasn't sitting flat over the burner.  After straightening it out it worked fine again.

Given the ambient temperatures and a desire for cool smoke I usually used the box over the smoker trick to keep the fish cool until they had enough smoke on them and still didn't have problems with getting enough smoke.  Maybe a test run or two with the lid off is in order to see what's happening.  Did you change your style or source for chips?  Maybe the chips are really damp?
