Well I cleaned a nice mess of red Japs along with some Serranos and put them in my dehydrater at about noon Sat.. I put it all on a wooden chair in our less than two year old ATTACHED garage ( which we will be making the final payment next week). My mother in law was spending the night and my wife and her were just watching tv. It was getting about 12:30 am and I fell asleep on the couch. Around 2:am my wife: frantically wakes me up saying there is a fire in the garage, so I get up and go look but can't see anything ( there was that much smoke). I tried to open the big door but the curcuit was burned out so tried to find the cord to manually open it and had to go outside to get some air. I came back into the house to get the fire extinguisher and got the big door open just to faintly see a small fire on the concrete, and extinguised that. When I let it air out a bit and turned on the light ( holy crap ) everything was covered in soot. My wifes car ( 1 month old )was only 4 feet from this near disaster, it is a white car that looked black.. And when I got back in the house my face looked like I just did a 12 hour shift at coal mine. What a mess, since it is a holiday weekend I wanted to get this done so decided to start cleaning it up myself. This soot is in every nook a cranny possible, plus there was a boom box sitting under the wooden chair that compleatly melted. Here is some pics and watch those electric dehydraters.

This is the soot on the floor, it was much thicker on the ceiling.

They say things happen for a reason. I guess this was telling me to notice I had cob webs up in the corners LOL

My Peppers look good and done.

And the rest

It could of been alot worse, but am just thankfull it didn't spread to the house. And I wasn't planning on smoking anything this weekend LOLOLOLOL

you are a lucky man..it could have been worse. opening a door to the fire could have been terrible...gald you and your family is well.

Sorry to hear about that mishap Cloud, but atleast you and your family are alright. Good thing that you didnt fall asleep in the garage like i usually do

Dang Lee sorry to see that but as the others said at least everybody is ok and I guess thats why we get that insurance stuff. Hopefully things will be back to normal before long except I don't think them peppers will every be the same

although you could have died from smoke inhalation.... looks like you were just seconds away from losing your garage and who knows your house or worse (lives)... looks like you saved your home and belongings... good job... very happy you are all ok.

dang, looks like that was bad. but you made out well with your lives and belongings. phew. thank the good lord. very lucky.

My God... I have been thru a fire...scary and terrible to clean up. Do NOT breathe that crap! I would consider a professional to clean up...homeowners should cover that.

Glad you folks are allright! Take care Lee!

I'm glad you and your family did not get hurt, Our house burnt down in Oct. 1998 and it is hell starting all over when everything u ever owned is gone to, Your family made it I'm glad

Hmmm, I did not see where white cloud used water to ensure no smouldering things would take place later on after he hit the sack. the dry chem just snuffs her out does not quench the heat nor hot coals under the char..
hope all is well..

Becareful lee, one disaster is enough, take it easy durin clean up! Great ta hear all are safe, we do alot in the shop, one reason there are several fire ext. in there, keep em by the doors an near windows. Good luck buddy!

Lee, no more smoking the garage!
You can sure tell the ff on tis sight eh? I am glad you did not get the whole backdraft thing and that you seem to have gotten any smoldering ash....WOW talk about dodging a bullet, I am so happy you and your family are ok! WHEW!!

I am glad to hear the family and house is safe. and it is very inspireing how you can find humor in the near trajedy.

be careful and wear a mask if you really feel you have to clean it up yourself.

happy labor day

Dang Lee-you're lucky that your wife and mom-in-law were still awake to notice the smoke. Back when I was working LE, we were tasked with helping the volunteer fire dept in putting out fires. (We went from cops to firefighters and they brought in the county to handle traffic.) Seems like the worst of the fires happend at night (greater loss of life and property).

Might be an idea to get a couple of smoke detectors and hardwire them together-one for the garage and one in the kitchen. That way if the one in the garage goes off, it will trip the one in the kitchen.

Glad you and yours are safe and sound.

WOW, Lee. Sure am glad your wife smelled in time.

Hope you are safe and sound.

Thanks everyone,
I have it 90% cleaned up now but it still has the nasty smell and getting better. I did wear a mask today and Cyote is right I should of spray some water on it afterwords but just felt for hotspots and inspected the attic. When I did go in the smoke filled room I did hold my breath and the entrance door was just a few feet away. I am thankfull for not getting the backdraft effect but I believe the fire was snuffed for lack of O2. Good idea Texas Hunter on letting everyone see the brand name of this, the dehydrater that was given to me used last fall by a bud. It is a House and Home brand. They shoulda called it a lack of garage and home. Also is a pic of just how much soot was on the ceiling, well everywhere. Thanks again guys, we are lucky folks.

Yeah Dutch,
This will be happening real soon. All the smoke detectors are hard wired in the house and I will be connect a garage unit to the rest of the bunch. I don't know why that isn't code. It was just inspected a couple years ago. I will have raise heck with the township on that because it is a good idea.
