Kingsford Competition

This may not be the best place for this post, and if so, my apologies....I was wondering if anyone uses Kingsford Competition briquettes when smoking? I posted this here because I typically smoke shoulders.

Any thoughts? Pros, cons? And, does it produce any less ash than regular Kingsford or other charcoal?

dont waste yer money. supposed to be packed tighter for longer low n slow burn times, but i never noticed any difference.

The only real difference I've noticed is considerably less ash.

As far as flavor goes, I don't taste any difference

I use it in the UDS all the time. It makes far less ash then regular Kingsford or Royal Oak briquettes. Also does not have the bad smell when lighting that the blue bag Kingsford has.

It tends to burn a little hotter so you have to be careful that way. I have used it for briskets, butts, ribs, chicken quarters, you name it, with great success. I actually like it better than lump in the UDS.

I have only burned through one bag. I used it once for grilling some steaks-worked great. I loaded the UDS with it and smoked an 8 lb butt and it held at 250 degrees for 9 hours. When the butt came off I put some chicken on and after another hour it had trouble getting over 200. I removed the cooking grate and reached down and stirred the coals to kick off a bunch of ash, put the food back on and temps jumped back up to 290 real fast. It then held the higher temps for another couple hours. And I still had some coals left over after I shut it down.

All in all it was good and I will probably buy it again. I would say it is better than the average briquette. But still produces more ash than lump.

I love the stuff... Pretty much my go to charcoal now. I tried a regular bag of kingsford and didn't care for the smell/taste. Tried a bag of cowboy lump..Not a fan. Just won't hold temp in my ecb.
Lots less ask and like Wutang said, with a bit of a stir it keeps temp up.
I did add a grate to the coal pan of the ecb, helps keep the ask away from your coal bed.
But heck yea, it's good stuff. Burns hotter so as long as that works with your smoker go for it.

Excellent...thanks folks. I have used it for steaks, chops, chicken just grilling and wondered if it was good as claimed. Seems like a good alternative to lump. I am honestly getting a bit tired of lump because of the inconsistency of the size. The only lump I can find that is fairly consistent is BGE and that's a bit pricey...

will definitely try Kingsford Competition next time. Thanks again.

I've burned 4 or 5 bags and like it ok. I rotate back and forth between K. Comp. and Cowboy lump. The lump has a lot less ash than the Comp. and has less noticeable smoke. Ultimately I like the lump better but have more or less been ok with the Comp as well. Got several bags of each that I need to use up!
