I've been looking to move from and elec Brinkman to a propane smoker. I've seen the GOSM "Big Block" set-up at Bass Pro ($199) and was leaning toward this unit. Then started reading about the Browning (Camp Chef) Smoke Vault 24. Went to Gander Mtn. and they had the unit ($399) in the box but no display.

What makes the SM24 worth/cost twice as much as the GOSM?

I can tell you I have no idea about the big block but I have seen, touched the smoke vault and it's a solid unit with strong legs and looks to be a very sound well built the wood pan is cast iron and the burner looks to be well made. Worth the asking price I'm not sure but I am in the same boat looking for a new smoker myself. I di have the Gosm smaller unit and I have lets say used it alot and I have not had any trouble at all. If I could see the big block I mite make my decesion on which one but I cann't find them here in Northeast FLa.

The browning units I have seen...to me look like a lower quality unit, The stainless steel door was flimsey...I don't have the GOSM big block, I have the regular and have had it for 8 years and I tell you it is one solid piece of equipment. I don't see paying that much more for the smoke vault....the little combo lock gimmick is what you must be paying for.

When I was looking at them the smoke vault was 299 and was often on sale for 259 but now that Browning has put their name on it seems they have gone up 100 bucks. I like the stainless door and I thought the unit looked a little better built then the GOSM but again that may have changed since Browning has taken over. I would have paid the extra 60 bucks when I was looking at them but I bought the Lang about that time and figured bringing home another smoker might be a bit much right then since the Lang was a surprise to the wife [IMG]
I don't personally see the Smoke Vault being worth twice the price

I found an expired Gander Mtn "Web Only" sale page with the vault listed for $299. Also Ebay has a buy-it-now for ~$250. Those prices seem more in line. But the SV24 does seem to have a wider temp range (180-400), jerky shelf (limited value) and a shinny door (nothing like a pretty bobble).

How does the Landmann-USA GOSM's compare to the originals?

I have an older wide body GOSM and have not even seen the GOSM's since they have been taken over so I can't answer that one personally.

Just noticed that the Gander Mtn Version is labeled "Smoke Vault" instead
of Browning. Can't remember what the one in the store said. So in theory, this unit should be cheaper since the Browning name is not stamped on the front.

I have a GOSM big block and am very happy with it. Looking at the specks of the unit above the differences I see are; aside from the stainless features this unit has 20,000 btu vs the GOSM 18,000 btu while the GOSM has an inch more depth and seven inches more height. This amounts to a quarter more cooking volume. I have not experienced any lack of heat in my GOSM.

I have my GOSM going right now, smoking a Butt. I have never had a problme with it. I'm not sure why you would need more BTU's from the burner, my GOSM can get close to 400 degrees. You certainly don't need that kind of heat when making Q.

There is no way I can see the justification...Not even close. The SmokeVault is an outstanding unit, and so is the GOSM. They seem pretty equal to me. They will both make the same Q, so why pay twice the price?

I can't give you advice on the units but I can tell you that Gander Mountain... Cabela's.... Bass Pro.... they are all the most expensive place to buy your smoker unless they are running a sale of some kind. I know that locality warrants purchasing from these places at times but they are great to shop and look at but you can usually find the same product much cheaper somewhere else if you look.

They are the only places I can find the units at locally. Don't want to order this item online.

Found coupon code for 15% off so now I might can get the Smoke Vault for $339 if the Brick and Mortar Store will match the price (have to add $20 for shipping online).

GOSM: $199 plus 2.5 Hour drive, better warranty, unknown future parts availability

    SMV-24: $339 plus 0.5 Hour Drive

Getting closer but now leaning toward the GOSM

I did the same deliberation when I bought my propane smoker. The smoke vault looked nice, but had no bottom vents for airflow control, and at least the floor model was flimsy. I bought a BB GOSM from Bass Pro when they were on sale for 179.99 and never looked back.

FWIW I went with the Vault. Got a price of $279 close to home so I pulled the trigger.

Congrats on your new smoker. They have them here at Sportsman's Warehouse for $259.00 (with the Browning logo).

Turns out the one's on the shelf at Gander Mtn had the Browning logo - the website must have an old photo. I was heading to the Chattanooga Sportsman's Warehouse when I got the $279 deal. Couldn't justify a 2 hour trip, one way, for $20.
