mishawaka In.
Just tried hardwood lump coal. I started out by putting about six pieces of
regular charcoal and put three good size piece on top in my chimney and put that on top of a sterno can for about 5 minutes it lit real well. This is a small amount because of the size of my smoker see pic below.it started out high about 350 then it leveled off after about 20 minutes.Been running pretty steady for about and hour just added another piece of lump.seems to burn hotter than regular charcoal.
Good Luck and Good smoking

I've always used just lump charcoal, heard that binders used in briquettes could impart an undesirable taste in slow cooking. Use briquettes for grilling all the time, though. Wonder if anyone has tried using briquettes in a smoker. What's the opinion out there?

I remember the first time I tried lump in my ECB! Holy Molly was that a hot fire! Burned all the paint off the ourside the the main tube! And of all things I had a chicken i there damned near caught fire - had to pull it out for awhile!

i use a combination of lump and briquettes myself.i also found lump alone is too hot and briquettes alone too cold for my ecb type smoker.....i learned this the same way as deejaydebi,i set my ecb on fire and burnt the paint off by using only lump......good luck

Lump is the way to go for your application. You got yourself a nice little rig there. I hope I didn't come on too strong the first time I told you it was a tailgater grill. I meant no harm and sometimes I can't express myself like I want to. I think you got it going on now. Good smoking and have a good day.

That's Ok It worked out for the better It inspried me to make it a true smoker.all well's that end's well. Thanks for the reply
Good Luck and good Smoking

Lump does burn hotter, and in my experience a little faster, but if you use the Minion method you should have no problems.

Last weekend I smoked for over 6 hours before I had to add anything to the fire.

I agree. I have only used lump for the grill and found it did burn hotter, but didn't last as long as the briquittes. Possibly not the best lump either though. Never tried it in the smoker, but will give it a go again sometime.

As far as grilling goes I am an even bigger fan of lump. I want a quick, hot sear when I am grilling, so I put the pile in the center, sear the meat, and move it to the side to finish.

On the smoker I can use more vent regulating, as well as adding wood, to keep the heat where it needs to be.

i have used lump, kingsford, and royal oak.........

in my ecb gourmet........had the best luck of all........good heat.....long lasting..........and less expensive.......royal oak......

lump burns up WAY to quick, for the price.......kingsford, with the newer faster type, briquettes........burns to quick......minion doesn't werk well here..........but with the royal oak, minion werks great

that is, at least in my werld......your mileage may vary........lolol
