Hey guys, I'm new on here.  My name is Jamy and I live near Yankton, SD.  I've grilled for years and own a Charbroil Tru Infrared that I LOVE.  Better than the Weber I used to own.  I've been thinking about getting a smoker for years now, and finally broke down and bought a Smoke Hollow #4 electric smoker on clearance at Menards about 2 months ago just to "try" it out.  We really enjoyed the slow smoked meat out of it.  Ribs, brisket, chickens, pork butts, etc.   All were delicious.  Well the racks in it are only 12" x 14" and I would have to long ribs or briskets in half to cook them, so I started looking at larger units and looking to upgrade.

I bought the Pitboss 820 at Menards and was REALLY happy at first to have a wood pellet smoker-grill for $500.  Well the temperature control unit on it does not work very well and I couldn't keep the temperature below 230 at any of the settings.   On 200 it would generally stay between 230-260 degrees.   I took it back today and ordered a Rectec.   Should have it in 4-5 days.

Thank you all for welcoming me to the site!   I can't wait to hear some reviews on what wood pellets to buy/use.

Welcome from Canada, Jamy.

I don't have a pellet smoker but I am dreaming of one. There is a pellet smoker group in the forums and several members have a Rec Tec. You shouldn't have trouble getting help with that rig.

I look forward to your posts.

Hello and welcome from East Texas. This is a great site, lots of information and great people that are willing to throw in their two cents worth on about anything.   Be sure and double check the temp gauge, even on new smokers or grills.

Thanks Gary, I've got a Maverick ET-732 to watch temps on the bbq and the meat.  GREAT tool I can't recommend enough.  This was a major contributor to the decision to take the Pitboss 820 back.  My Maverick let me know just how out of whack the temp controls on the pitboss were.
