So I have been doing to Aaron Franklin method of smoking for a bit now and I am very pleased with the results. However, I am not pleased with the cost of getting a 50lb box of post oak wood shipped. It is $96. In Texas, where the wood is plentiful, it is obviously cheaper. I have two questions. I have done some research (yes I am that crazy) and have found that post oak wood actually grows in the extreme southeastern part of Iowa. So I was wondering if there are any Iowans who can attest to this? Second, if post oak remains this difficult and expensive to get ahold of, I need to look into other options. Does anyone in the Iowa area know of any decent sources to get oak wood? I know there is white oak and red oak in Iowa. I would prefer white as it is milder. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest you check out Craig's list in your area for firewood providers. And give a call to tree service companies and see if they sale any of the wood they get.Almost forget, talk to any local logging companies also.Good luck

I just bought some wood from ebay and its pretty reasonable. i got 18lbs of pecan for 23.49 shipping included. 6" splits  you can get wood that is bark free if you like there is a plethora of sellers there with all different kinds of wood.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the answers. I have checked locally and have checked Craigslist. There just isn't a huge market for smoking wood in the area I live.

I checked firewood awhile back. I guess I just assumed firewood and smoking wood were different
