I've noticed that the Spicewine thermometer seems to be the pick of choice for quite a few UDS builders, but I came across this turkey fryer thermo and was wondering if it would do the job as well?

It peaked my interest because of the 12 inch stem whereas most usually range just 3-4 inches. Also, in general how much of a difference is there between the actual temp of the cooking grate and the temp shown on the side mounted thermometer?

Remember, if you use the charcoal grate from the small Weber, it is about 13.5" in diameter. So it is going to be a little difficult to get it up and down out of a 22" (thereabouts) drum with a thermo probe sticking 12" into the drum.

Most people say 30° but mine seems a little more, but then the Tel-tru that I bought has a 3" stem. I tried a Spicewine and the difference was about the same.

The problem I see with using that therm is when you are taking the charcoal basket in and out. It would have to be removed each time, pita imo.

The middle grate temp is right around 40 degree hotter than what the flush mounted therm reads.

Thanks for the tips guys.

I've never factored in removing the charcoal basket with a 12" thermometer installed so thanks for the heads up. Just goes to show I'm not the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree.

I just drilled a small hole in the side of the drum so that the tip of the probe ended up right under the lower grill. I found a small 90 degree piece of metal that I pop rivited on below the hole, so that the clip that usually goes on the side of the turkey stock pot grips it to keep the dial from flopping around. (sorry I don't have a picture of that yet).

I just put the probe in while I'm cooking, and take it out when I need to remove the firebox, grill, etc. It's no big trouble.

I see about 40F higher temp difference below the grill vs the dial in the lid.
