I've lived in NW Ohio, and recently moved to the extreme NW corner, a stones throw from Indiana and Michigan.  I've been grilling most of my adult life, but just recently purchased a Char-Griller smoker-grill.   I did get it primarily for the grill, but with the attached fire box, I tried smoking some pork last weekend.  Turned out very good for my first foray into low and slow cooking. I will be looking for any hints on meats to smoke, rubs to use, charcoal/wood to use, ect.

Welcome John!  The Char-griller will smoke well for you with just a few minor modifications. The first I would do is add a charcoal basket in the fire box. Use the search bar to get more good ideas then just ask if you have any questions.

I may try some of the modifications, but I haven't used it as a grill yet.  I know I need a new thermometer. 200 degree oven registered as 250 on the supplied thermometer, but so did 225 and 250. 300 degree oven registered as 300, so did 325 and 350.  Not much use there.  The charcoal basket looks like my second mod.

A good therm is almost a must. A very popular and good therm is the Maverick ET-732. It is a digital dual probe therm, one for smoker chamber and one for meat temp. It has a programmable remote that will let you view temps from up to 100' away and you can set up alarms like too high or too low temps and also timers. One of our forum sponsors has them on sale right now with Free shipping and the best customer service available today anywhere!

I have 2 of them and wouldn't think of smoking without one! Next to my smoker I think it's the best investment I've made in all my BBQ tools!
