I have a very small smoker we bought MANY years ago (15 maybe) but at the time it was strictly my husband's toy.  Over the years he lost interest. Over the past couple of years I have become more and more interested in being a bit more self sufficient. Being completely honest it is a bit of a struggle to get my husband on board with my schemes and dreams. LOL  I have my illegal chickens on the side yard for eggs, veggies growing in the front yard due to the trees outback, and have announced that NOTHING is getting planted on our property that is not edible in some way.  I am chomping at the bit to start making my own sausages and bacon etc...have been for a while but after the pink slime in the beef am now more determined to have a bit more control over who gets to poison my family. My question is....rather than buy a new expensive smoker couldn't I just convert an old fridge into one? My elder son suggested a gas stove putting the chips in the broiler drawer but I am not sure there would be enough height in it to hang meat in the oven section.  Any thought out there?? Val.

....My Grandpa converted an ole fridge way back 50 years ago. He lived in Webster Wisconsin. Smoked all kinds of fish. He used an offset steel firebox and  channeled the smoke to the fridge with a big pipe. It worked very well. He smoked some killer fish in that thing. The fridge had the shelves in it already so it was perfect. They lived on a lake and ran a resort so they had the smoker going year round...Good luck if you convert one. Looks like Scarbelly has the link for you to check out...Again WELCOME...

Welcome to SMF glad you joined us. I sometimes live a little north of ya in Crystal River. Personally I think a fridge conversion would be better than a stove conversion it would give you a lot more room. You'll find lots of good info and some great recipes here. Have fun and happy smoking
