I built this from an old propane bottle. My intention was to heat my tent or camper this summer. Our summer nights in the Colorado high country can get quite cold. I've realized that I can burn charcoal and hickory (or whatever other wood) and run some pipe from the heater to my electric smoker. This will give me the smoke ring and stronger smoke flavor my smoker has always lacked. I can also do some cold smoking. It will be like the mailbox addition I've seen but waaay cooler. Or hotter? :)

Sounds good for Smoking and nice fabrication job. But what is your plan as a heater? Seem like it will throw a lot of heat and a lot of Carbon Monoxide. What is the best way to vent it in a tent or camper?...JJ

Well, in a tent or camper there will have to be a slightly open window to let fresh air in. It will also have a 3" pipe/flu running the smoke up and out. I burned it last night for the first time. It doesn't heat up as much as I thought it would, it's pretty small. I think I'll add some fire bricks to lay in there or bolt a thick steel plate on top.

Sounds like an idea!!

Hopefully you have a way to cut the amount of smoke down, because heavy smoke is a bad thing.

I'm thinking I'll just burn 6 or 7 lumps of charcoal with a couple chunks of wood. The main idea is to get a good smoke ring. I know the smoke ring does nothing for flavor, but I want a smoke ring!
