Hey everyone,
I am new to smoking and I am looking to get some new equipment. Here is my predicament. I currently have a Kingsford horizontal grill (similar to this: http://www.amazon.com/Masterbuilt-KB...8920300&sr=8-1).

I would like to get a firebox for my grill to use as a smoker but the only ones I can find are $100-120 from masterbuilt. Does anyone know of another company who sells one for cheaper?

Or, would it be better if I got something cheap like the ecb to learn on?

I would prefer to convert the grill I have now but that is only if I can find a firebox that is cheap enough.
Thanks for the help,
Mike

if it were me, i'd get an ecb - you can make great q on this without the expense of modifying the unit you already have, which evidently works great as it is.

The ECB is as its name implies pretty cheap to buy. I have one that I still use and I have produced some great food using it. I also have a brinkman SnP. This was bought at a yard sale for for next to nothing and with a little clean-up looks and works great. So if you didn't want to spend much Money you got check out some yard sales or craigslist and might find a good ole smoker for cheap.

Also, The grill you have could be used as a smoker pretty effecivley without a fire box. If you just keep the fire on the far side of the grill and the food on the other, you have indirect heat, add a little smoke and your smoking meat.

Hope to see you smoking some meat and posting some Q-view soon

First welcome to SMF glad you joined us. Awhile back I saw some side fire boxes at Lowes for around 50 bucks they looked like they would fit many kinds of smokers so you might check there. If not then the ECB or whatever kind of smoker you can find someone here probably has or has had and can give you some good info about

Welcome to SMF. You might want to go to the Roll Call post and introduce yourself. Also be sure to check out Jeff's 5Day Smoking Basics eCourse, you can find it here 5 Day eCourse

Not sure where you are located but you might try Craig's List, they usually always have a good selection of Smokers on there which you can usually pick up one for under $50.00.

Hey thanks for all of the help everyone. Looks like I am just going to search craigslist for a used ecb to learn on.

Mike

The ones at Lowes are designed to fit the Char-griller horizontal smokers. But with a power drill and some genuine red-neck know how, you could probably "modify the bolting patterns and fit the two pieces together. Just make sure it is on securely and maybe add some extra bracing or something just to be safe.

That's what I was thinking. Punch the the knockout out of the Char-Griller SFB, line up and trace pattern, remove metal, bolt, brace, and enjoy.
