I am completely new.  I am from Mn. would like to purchase a grill/smoker combo for my father in law for CHRISTmas but have no clue on ANYTHING.  I have no skill levels, love to cook, I asked Santa for a smoker as well.  Hope to find some good advice.  Thanks for all the help.

Welcome to the board! Look up "WSM" for my suggestion - says the guy who doesn't have one. I'm running an offset; you can see it in my sig link.

Welcome to SMF brendalee!  Great Christmas wishes.  As an owner of a Weber Smokey Mountain, aka WSM, you can't go wrong.  Simple to use, ready to go right out of the box, year-round supply of fuel (charcoal and wood chunks), almost a set and forget type smoker, and will last for decades.  I got mine last Christmas and exercise it once or more per week.

Keep us posted on what you get.  There are lots of options.

Can't they double as a plain charcoal grill, too?
