Anyone know if the cement wall backer board for bathrooms ( aka as wonderboard ) would be good to line the inside of my gosm? Is it heat resistant, would it leach chemicals when heated? I was thiking 3/8 thick could fit in the channel around the inside front door and panels could be cut for the back and sides to wedge between the rack guides. Even a piece for the bottom could be cut to fit with a large opening for the burner. Think this would increase the heat holding effiency and help prevent butts and such from the dreadded freeze in the pull temp?

It would become flammable as grease and whatnot got absorbed into it. You would be much better served building a tight fitting wind break to keep some heat in and the breeze off the unit.

I'm not sure what you mean here... but if it's the plateau you speak of...nothing short of Divine intervention is gonna speed that up. You can try, but you'll only burn the meat.

You'd be a poster child for cancer on that one! If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Rich has the ticket.

You would become famous that's for sure!! Written up in all the textbooks....

I'd be careful about adding something like that to the inside of the smoker.

You might consider wrapping your smoker in a welding blanket or using some bricks inside, but something about those chemicals in the wonderboad would prevent me from doing what you're talking about.

I don't remember the thread but sometime back someone posted a picture of a vertical smoker (it may have been a GOSM) that had been fitted with insulation boards on the outside of the smoker. He reported great success and much improved efficiency. He posted a picture of it and while it certainly looked different, it wasn't half bad as I recall. You might want to consider insulating the OUTSIDE. Custom fit the parts and affix them to the smoker.

You could insulate the outside but it will NOT help you thru a stalled butt!!

Your gonna go thru all that trouble, buy an insulated smoker!

It's been used quite a few times. That picture was taken just the other day when I was trying to show off my brand new transport device...err hand truck. My buddy had recently fabricated a nice looking custom cart with castors for his smoker, and I just couldn't be outdone by him.

I try to keep it shiny and purdy.

Ifin yall is lookin ta add some thermal mass, use some bricks in the bottom. I put four in the bottom a my GOSM ta hep with temp recovery after openin the door. Otherwise, I ain't never need no insulation. Just my two coppers worth.
