Howdy, your yankee neighboor from NY!

  1. Christmas was good this year, jolly ol' saint nick brought me a Smoke Hallow Gas Smoker!

I'm a big fan of BBQ but I never thought of smoking my own food till I recently went to a great smokehouse and had the best brisket I've ever tasted. A month later here I am! And I'm very glad to be here!

It's 10 degrees outside and snowing like something I've never seen before, but I have my smoker on the back enclosed patio ( door open ) with some nicely seasoned ribs sitting in there, being cooked around ~230 degrees. I only seasoned the smoker last night!

I can't wait to learn from all of you experienced kings of BBQ/smoking.

Maybe I'll post some pictures once my first rack of ribs is finished!

    Adam

PS: I had to put an extra thermometer in the middle of the smoker, as the one on the door was reading WAY too high! Almost ruined my ribs!

Welcome to the forums Adam. I see you learned the first lesson about smokin, Don't trust the smokers thermometer. Where abouts in NY are ya?

  5. Thanks for the welcomes, I appreciate it

All the way in Buffalo, as far away from the big city as you can get! ( and still live in NY, that is ). Yeah the one im using now seems accurate, however regulating the temperature to stay around 230 isnt easy when its 10 degrees out! haha.

I need to get a baby monitor so I can hear the alarms on the thermometers [IMG]

Welcome to the SMF. Be sure to take advantage of Jeff's free 5 day course
As for the monitor - a lot of folks use the Maverick ET 73 to remotely monitor both food and smoker temps
    Good luck

Welcome Adam to SMF you will love this place and the folks here will just love to help you with just about anything to do with smoking meat. You have already shown that you have the will to smoke and thats a good trait here. With your new smoker and willing to smoke in extreme weather conditions theses ribs could very well be the best you have ever eaten. So once again welcome and there's alot to learn here so

From a Jersey Yankee welcome to the site.
Nice that you got bitten by the bug, got the smoker, seasoned it last night and are on your way to smoking your own ribs.
    Good luck!

  10. I think I made a big mistake!

I used wood chips in my propane smoker instead of chunks, as a result the chips pretty much got burned up.. not too much smoldering!
