How to use my Maverick ET732 on OKJ Horizontal?

Hey gang,

Ok so another dumb question by this newbie. After reading some good things on this forum about the above setup for monitoring temps, I ordered one from A-Maze-N Products.

I have the OKJ Horizontal offset smoker. In reading the manual for the ET732, it states not to have the probe wires in a pinching situation like having the cover closed over them.

So what do most folks do in this case? Drill holes in the smoker?

I am focusing on hopefully sealing up my new OKJ here in the next few days, using Permatex around the cooking barrel and firebox lids,  and now I need to put new holes in? Easy to tell I am new, what to do about these wires never occurred to me until I read the manual.

Thanks for any feedback on what others do in this case.

You could drill holes and pack with foil after putting the wires through. You could also wrap wires in foil where the lid will close on them for some extra protection.

Thanks, I may give wrapping the wires with foil a try, not real fond of having to drill holes in my smoker. I guess once the Permatex sealant is on the lid that also will maybe provide a little more cushioning effect for them.

they'll be fine... as long as it's not a real tight pinch....

I drilled holes you can go pretty small on my Weber kettle wouldn't pinch the wires just my thoughts.

The pinch is okay on the cable, but have you ever slipped and dropped something? The slam down could be ashore ouch for the wire on the probe. Drill a hole, not in the lid, you have to open and close it. Them plug with a wet piece of cloth or a cork stopper. The Holes so small that it really doesn't matter for leakage. More of protecting the probe wire. If you use a cork or rubber stopper you can notch the side for the wire to pass through.

If you search probe eyelets on the forum, you'll find some ideas; especially from WSM owners. I intend on doing the same to my WSM soon.

I will probably try getting by without the holes first, then if I don't think it will work too good will go ahead and look at putting couple small holes in it.

If your going to be sealing the door why not just not seal a small area in order to run the probes? A 1 cm opening in the caulk probably won't hurt any and will give the wires some wiggle room
