If you are having a hard time smelling the smoke walk away from the general area, take in a few deep breaths of fresh air then go back and sniff your smoke again. Sometimes when you have been near or at the fire for a while you lose the ability to differentiate between the smell of charcoal or propane smell and wood smoke. The smell of freshly lit charcoal often overpowers the more subtle smell of woodsmoke until the charcoal is fully burning then the woodsmoke smell comes to the fore.
