Houston Smoking

  1. Hey guys, had a smoker now for 4 weeks and have done about 10 different smokes with all kinds of different rubs and trying to control the temp of a very leaky grill.  I bought the River Grille from home depot thinking for 500$ it had to be pretty solid but it really isn't.  I am able to maintain 225 with lump but hard to do anything above that without using an insane amount of fuel.  I am planning to do a full size butt day after tomorrow for Monday night football so any ideas would be helpful.

[IMG]to SMF.  you may want to try to put your model in the search bar and see if there are some mods others have done to make it run more efficiently.  As for the butt, plan on 2 hrs per lb at 225*.  bring it up to an internal temp of 200-205* for pulling.  Put a nice rub on it, put it in and let it be.  try not do look at it too much you will just add time to the cook.  you may also want to search some pork butt threads to know what to expect.  Don't forget the pics.

Welcome to the forums, Bruce!  This is the best place I know for sharing ideas on smoking, grilling, curing, etc.  There are plenty of friendly, knowledgeable folks who really enjoy helping one another.  Looking forward to your input here, and just ask when you need anything...someone here will surely have the answer.

As David says, it sounds like you might want to look into some mods for that rig to make it a little more temperature efficient.  Lots of less expensive retail smokers leak badly...air, smoke, and most importantly, heat.  I'm not familiar with your particular rig, but if you search the smoker forums for mods to similar smokers, you may find some good mods for yours.

    Good Luck!

[IMG]to SMF!  We are so glad you joined us! Would you mind updating your profile to show the other SMF members where you are located?  Might meet a few neighbors!

We love to see pictures of what you are cooking (or what we call q-views here at SMF).  To "upload the q-views" just follow the directions here and it will be easier. If you are using a cell phone, an IPad or a kindle, go to the main SMF page and click the Mobile button. Will make the uploads a bit faster too.

If you didn't read the "Terms of Service" notes.....please do.  There are a few things that everyone should know about those pesky little rules before plunging into the forums and some guidelines of how to interact within the forums. Off site links are not allowed here at SMF per Jeff. Not that you have done anything wrong....just a little bit of FYI for new members!

If you need any help roaming around the forums....just holler!  Happy to help out!
