Last weekend I bought a Big Tex 1400 at an estate sale for $100.00 (I don't think anybody knew what it was) Downloaded the manual and have got a 7lb butt on it right now. This is my first electric smoker. I put 2 hickory chunks in the smoke bin, both a little bit bigger than the size of a golf ball...everything was going good, all of a sudden the smoker belched, and blew out a six foot stream of smoke out of the hole in the top? I opened the door and the wood was on fire? Tossed that and put 1 piece of wood in and had the same thing happen? Temp is at 225/230....Do I need to soak these wood chunks before putting them in the smoke bin?
