Hi all..Great site..wish there was something like this when I got started..

Anyway..I'm an 18 year Navy Chief, Have been cooking in various form or fashion since I was a kid..didn't get any good at it until my wife got sick of cooking..
Back about 2000 or so my mom bought me a brinkmann offset smoker, but it's one of the good ones it's all heavy gage steel..3/16" or a 1/4" sucker is HEAVY! But it works very well.

I haven't been cooking outside much lately, no time, but I usually make pork ribs and Boston Butts for the family...I took up dutch oven cooking a few years back, as all my girls are in scouting, and I wind up doing the cooking
at the camp outs....someone came along at the first one and very officiously informed me that I wasn't cooking in the girlsout way, and that I hadn't been to this class and that class....That didn't last long.. (I AM a Chief) and now I dont' get any flak, they just all line up bowls in hand...

Good food is the worlds greatest persuader...

I have a small collection of cast iron, mostly my dutch ovens...but I recently scored a 25 gallon cauldron...I am so wanting to make 20 gallons of chili..oh well..maybe I'll find a group big enough before too long.

My family and I are also avid gardeners...we have a quarter acre or so under cultivation right now..mostly tomatoes for sauce and peppers and beans...
Thanks for a great site!

Ain't been here long myself but I have gotten plenty of good advise.. No one has come up with a good recipe for carp yet.. [or squid] no offense from a
retred jarhead.. WELCOME !!.. Hemi..

I am a cannibal...I'll eat calamari until I puke...

Carp is easy...pressure cook it and make fish cakes...the only other thing it is good for is stink bait to catch a more worthy meal...catfish f'rinstance..

Or the old saw about throw the possum (or carp) away and eat the board..

I wonder what "cooking in the girl scout way" means to them.
Welcome to the site zopi. No doubt that you will love it here. Would love to see pics of your garden sometime.

I love artillery...I'm a firecontrolman...blowing stuff up is like a religion...

THANKS!

Well...they have different levels of outdoor courses the leaders mush go through...like four levels later you can quit using strictly briquettes, and then begin cooking over an open fire...can't use flamable liquids at all, other than small propane bottles..the coleman size...and a whole list of other requirements...and I'm not saying they aren't good ones, most folks don't have a clue...but as I was there basically catering to other folks and not teaching or cooking woth the scouts them selves, I moved into camp and set up an outdoor kitchen stadium and went to work...then got yelled at....then made the cardinal mistake af saying the words "Boy Scout."

OOPS. Shoulda known better, but being the feminist I am and a strong believer in equal rights..(for me too!) I took exception to the prevailing attitude that boy scout skills weren't acceptable (you begin to see how dumb this is getting...)

Anyhow...after a shoved a still hot fresh tortilla chip loadeed with homemade salsa fresca into said busybody's face (pretty much everyone else though the "stadium" was awesome...) she asked where I got those fantastic chips...I pointed at the antique piece of cast iron with a fresh bath frying on the fire..."You MADE those? In the woods?"

Some people have no clue about cooking...

yeah..the rest is history, and I have been asked to cook for five whole troops next spring, without anyone questioning my methods..if I am in port at the time...

In fact, I was following a thread over on Camp-cook.com about fatties, and follwed a link over here..had never heard of fatties, but being a fan of sausage and charcuterie, I though that they, in combination with a dutch oven mountain man breakfast would be the bomb to feed a bunch of ravenous girlscouts for breakfast....

Impressing GS moms is fun too....remember...growing up is the first step to growing old.
