Hello, and welcome to the site. You will find everything you want to know, from what type of smoker you want to "try" and how to properly use it, to all of the smoked goodness you can imagine. In addition to that, smoker builds, gardens, canning, and overall everything, is also available.

What kind of smoker do you want to be? What type of electric model do you have?

    Again, welcome to SMF!
  3. Currently, I do not own a smoker.

I have always loved good smoked ribs.

I want to make my own.

I have a friend that promised me he was making a smoker from a propane tank.

    But nothing yet.

I'm not sure that type of smoker I want/need.

The attraction of a "real" smoker with wood fire and all the old school tending is good but I have don't know if I want to "tend".

I understand that the digital is a "set it - forget it" is nice too.

    I'm such a waffle! [IMG]

Welcome to the SMF Family, 2005xfr.

    There are several things to take into consideration when looking for a smoker;

How much do you want to spend?

How many family members/guests do you want to be able to feed?

What fuel source do you want to use? Electric; propane; charcoal; wood?

Many of use will tell you to pick out your smoker and if you can, go with the next size up cuz after awhile you will wish you had a bigger smoker.

Many of us here started out with the same questions and most of use have had/used one or more fuel source before settling with what we use now.  Some of us may still use diffferent sources depending on how many and what we are cooking.  If I'm smoking something and it just Ma Dutch and me, I'll use my small electric ugly drum smoker; if I'm also feeding the two still at home boys, I'll fire up the propane GOSM Big Block smoker and if it for the whole family with spouses and grandkids then the job goes to the Lang 60D.

i started w/ a charcoal /stick burner  and an cheap up right. the cheap up right never got used. The offset got eaten by a falling tree. now i use the MES 40" and love it. Is it the same as coals / wood? No . Do i have to tend a fire ? No. It's all about how much time you want to spend tending to the smoker and food.

Welcome to the forum, you are in the right place to learn about smokers and smoking.

The closest to a set it and forget it you can get and still get that wood & charcoal flavor is either a Weber Smokey Mountain smoker or a UDS (Ugly Drum Smoker). Both are very good smokers and work about the same, but the UDS is one you build (fairly cheap to build) or you can buy a WSM. Both create that wonderfull charcoal smoked product.
