Hi everyone!

I am a novice at smoking. As a matter of fact, I am less than a novice as I haven't personally smoked anything myself (meat that is). I am a hunter who has a friend that has been smoking for many years now. He built his own large smoker in his back yard years ago and creates some incredible food. I "borrow" recipes from him and sometimes equipment for mixing things like jerky and fresh breakfast sausages that I can make myself. I feel guilty asking him to smoke things for me, so I rarely do. He has never said no or even hesitated when asked, but still I feel guilty asking for the kind of time it takes to smoke from him. I have been using him as a guide and idea man for what I have planned.

We were discussing what I could do to make some small steps to processing and making my own sausages, fowl, fish and other foods. During the conversation he said "too bad you don't know someone who has an old refrigerator. You could build your own smoker.". I suddenly realized that I did know someone with an old fridge; my dad. I called him and he said I could have it since he hasn't used it in years. It turned out to be a 1949 Coldspot refrigerator. I will post more on that later.

I have been reading and combing the forums for a couple of weeks now gathering information for the smoker build that I have started. What a wealth of incredible information there is on here! I'm sure I will have questions along the way, so I thought I might as well join now. I will post a thread on my build with the photos that I have taken so far.

Hey hammer,

We are almost neighbors, I live in North Central Iowa.  Welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the welcome Troutter!

I'm from New Ulm, MN. Fairly close to the border. I sometimes wish I were down in the nice warm "tropics" of northern Iowa!

haha... yes, it's pretty warm down here, mid 30's today, which actually isn't to bad for this time of year.  You'll have to post some pictures of your smoker build.  The people here love stuff like that.
