My name is Kevin. I am pretty new at this. I had a Brinkman charcoal bullet for a year and really enjoyed doing a turkey for the family on T-day. I tried ribs, chicken and a few fatty's last year. This year I did a butt and it turned out pretty good. I had bad luck holding temps real good with this unit and I didn't like the clean up. I just picked up a GOSM used twice for $50.
Man this is so much nicer. I did a butt last weekend following a lot of the guide lines from here. It was awesome. Everyone loved it.
5lb boston butt took 9 hrs start to pull with 1.5hr rest time.....
I wanted to try a Brisket this weekend for slicing. The only one I could find was $5.50/lb $40+ dollars. Is this normal?
    I thought I read $1.50 - $2.00 per poung on here?????

Anyway, I will be learking around and learning as I go....

    Thanks for all the help

Kevin welcome to SMF glad you decided to join us. Thats very high for a brisket I think at least. If you have a Sams Club or Costco or even a Walmart you may want to check their prices or even a local meat market. One of the local grocery chains here prices their briskets at about 3.99 a lb but any of the other places I mentioned around here are under 2.00 a lb. Good luck and happy smoking

welcome Kevin from a fellow Illinoisan.

I am not a brisket guy so I cant help you with that.

I also own a GOSM, and really like the smoked food it puts out(butts spares, bb's, ABT's, etc.)

Hey Kevin! Just drove by Rockford last weekend on my way home from Milwaukee...I live in Decatur, about 2 1/2 - 3 hours south of you.

Around here (Kroger) brisket is always $3.99 per pound, so I usually don't buy it. I certainly would pass on it if I saw $5 a pound...

If someone else hasn't mentioned it yet, try a large chuck roast! You end up with something very similar to brisket: smoked beef - but generally more moist, cheaper, and it won't take as long as brisket. I LOVE a good, smoked chuck roast.

Welcome to the SMF. glad you're liking the GOSM. Brisket is not usually a high priced cut, so you might look elesewhere for a better deal.

Wow, I am surprised at that price. We have Kroger(King Soopers) here in Colorado and Brisket is usually 1.99 but you have to trim it yourself.

    Hello Kevin,

Welcome to the family. I have usualy had the best luck going to a local butcher, or if you have the time, get to know your local grocery store(Kroger, I read). I have been working with mine to where she will order in a box of Brisket for especially for me. They usually come 6 to a box and I usually can get lucky enough to get 1 11 lb or smaller brisket out of it.
    Good luck to you.

Welcome from another Illinoisan, your local Walmart should have brisket (packer) for around $1.99 a pound. Here around Wilmington this is what I pay. You could also consider smoking a chuck roast for some real nice smoked beef.

Rockford, Chicago, Wilmington.... I smell smoke all around me! I am also pretty new to this hobby and find the most challanging thing is to figure out what to throw in the smoke next.

I guess i have jumped on the bandwagon of taking pictures of the finished product, everyone here loves to look at "Qview" !

    Hi Kevin
I'm originally from Belvidere. I still have family that lives there. That does seem high in price. My mom thinks Woodmans has good prices in Rockford.
Good luck, you will find a lot of pictures on here of things you'll want to try!!
