Hello From Reno!

    Hi Everyone,

    I'm a new member, but have been perusing the forums for information for a while now...  As you can see in the title, I am located in Reno, Nevada.  

    I have an El Cheapo (char-griller) offset smoker that I have modified enough to get consistent temps over the last couple years.  I started with making a fire basket out of expanded steel to hold the coals better.. then I put in a dryer vent on the inside to extend the chimney down to the cooking level.. then I used some angle iron and gasket rope to give the lid a better seal.. and finally used some high heat silicone to seal up any holes that I could find.  I also put in a water pan against the firebox to absorb some heat and force the heat under it to the middle of the smoker.  I tossed in a few bricks on the left side to absorb some heat also, but dont feel like they are doing anything =)

    With the cheap, thin metal I lose a lot of heat and blow through the lump coal on each smoke.  I typically go through about three full chimneys of coal for a 2-3 hour smoke.  All I have been smoking is tri tips and veggies with the occasional roast or some other cheap cut that I find at the store.  So most of the time my smoke times are under 3 hours.

    I recently tore down my brick fireplace inside my living room and have the brick just begging me to build a permanent smoker on the patio.  I have been spending my extra time planning out how I should build it, but am curious as to how much coal I will need to heat a big brick smoker up to temp...

    Anywho... Hi everyone, I'll probably be a regular here since it's so fun tinkering with the smoker and cooking great tasting food =)

    Hey Jaez. Welcome to SMF. I am about 45 minutes outside of Reno in the Mountains of Cali.

    As for your patio smoker it will depend on the insulation and construction on how much fuel you will burn.

    I was thinking it would be about a six foot high brick behemoth... 2x2x2 foot firebox and a 2x2x2 cooking box with a couple feet to space everything out.

    Probably just a pipe dream right now and will not come to fruition...

    Maybe I'll make things easy and use the brick to make a firebox then make a wood cabinet on top for the smoking chamber... so many ideas, so little time and money to make them happen =)

    Hello and welcome ,Jaez . I have an idea of you problem and IMHO , I would away with the Water , the Brick will act as a heatsink and extend the time of your fuel. Tried wood [​IMG]

    A little bit of work , but worth the effort. If you still lose heat , grab a Welder's blanket and cover the Smoke chamber.

    Stick with us and we'll have you wanting to enter the Smoke-off you have there...[​IMG]  , it just takes practice and persistence .

    I've had some decent success with what I have and know that a lot of the problems would be fixed with a better smoker.  I can't wait to get a home made smoker built because there's nothing like giving people good food and then telling them that you built the smoker from scratch that produced the great food.  Of course I will probably be asked to start making smokers for everyone if it all goes good..

    Building a smoker is part of the adventure!  Nobody but you to blame or praise after the cook.

  8. Glad you joined the group. The search bar at the top of any page is your best friend.
    About anything you wanna know about smoking/grilling/curing/brining/cutting or slicing
    and the list goes on has probably been posted. Remember to post a QVIEW of your smokes.
    We are all smoke junkies here and we have to get our fix. If you have questions
    Post it and you will probably get 10 replies with 11 different answers. That is
    because their are so many different ways to make great Q...
