Hello SMF! I have had an increasing interest in smoking meat. I have borrowed an electric and propane smoker and used each, one time. I had better luck with the propane than the electric. I was planning to build an offset the other day and my father in law had some friends that are giving one away. I don't know much about it as I do not have it yet, but I have been researching extensively. I've stumbled across this site several times over the years and decided now is the time to join. I have lots to learn and depending on the quality of the smoker I may still end up building one. Thanks and looking forward to meeting some fellow enthusiasts.

Thanks for the welcomes guys! After much reading, I think we are just going to build one now. I think it will be fun and a good time for some family bonding. My father in law has a welding shop with all the tools and already enough scraps to build for mostly free. Don't have exact dimensions yet but guessing somewhere around the 36x18 for the cooking chamber and whatever the calculator recommends for the firebox. Just have to decide on reverse flow or not. Seems to be a huge debate with lots of success both ways.

Well things took a change again. The offset smoker never came through. My boss upgraded to a pellet smoker and is selling me his previous one. He only used it one season before his upgrade. It's a Cajun Injector XL. I picked it up this morning. He gave me two plastic sacks full of several varieties of wood chips. I plan on doing some chicken this afternoon and a brisket and ribs tomorrow.
