  1. Hi,

Mike B from New Hampshire and better known around the web as Healeydays.  My avatar is my 59 Austin Healey 3000.

I'm new to smoking and will be getting my propane Charbroil vertical smoker just before the 4th and plan on trying it out on the family.  I'm a pretty accomplished regular cook as I do the cooking for the family (wife made sure of it as fist time she invited me over to eat when we were dating, she burned everything). so I'm not scared of trying new things.

When I'm not under the hood of an old temperamental British car, I also am a wood turner making custom pens, so woods at my house, local and other is usually plentiful.

That brings me to a question that I will ask elsewhere on the forum.  What would you do as your first piece to smoke that might be a little forgiving as this will be the 1st voyage of my smoking hobby?

Hi Mike and welcome. I'm from MA and we have a New England group here if you are interested in joining there. It is on the toolbar under groups.

You really can't go wrong with chicken or 3-2-1 spareribs or 2-2-1 baby backs. If you use the search on the forum you will find all sorts of trials and tribulations, recipes and methods!

Good luck and welcome to SMF!

Hey, Mike...welcome to the forum. Glad to have another new englander on board. Lots of good folks and good info here.
An easy and forgiving piece of meat that you can do lots with is a pork butt. It's got plenty of moisture in it so its hard to dry out. You can pull it, slice it, tacos, sauced, plain, etc.. And if you're worried about a finish time for a party, its one of those meats that tastes as good or better after you smoke it and then let it sit in the fridge for a day or two to let the flavors meld together. Just re-heat and you're good to go. Best of luck with whatever you decide.
  4. Hello Mike, welcome to the Forum.
