Hello from Maryland

    Hi my name is Kyle.  I live in Maryland just south of the state line and about 20 minutes from Gettysburg.  I have been married for 4 years now and we have one son who is nine months old now.  I spent 5 years in the Marines, which is how I ended up on the east coast when I am actually a California native. 

    I started smoking about this time last year.  I have a chargriller duo and received the side firebox as a birthday present from my wife last may.  I have done a good number of pork loins with decent success as well as a number of whole chickens that I butterflied.  I have been turning to this forum since I started smoking whenever I needed advice and am just now getting around to actually becoming a member.  I am about to go start up the grill to do a pork loin that has been soaking in apple juice, apple cider vinegar and a little mustard powder overnight.  I'll do my best to post some pictures of my process so that I can get some critiques to make sure I am on the right path.  I'll also try to include some pics of my smoker and the simple modifications that I have done to it.  I am really looking forward to getting to participate in this community rather than just sitting back and reading.

    Here is my smoker with the very basic mods that I did to it.  I lowered the exhaust vents opening using a dryer vent hose and put in a baffle to distribute the heat and smoke a little better.  I also sealed around the lid with a high temp gasket putty to try and keep some more smoke in.  My neighbor was nice enough to weld me up a new charcoal basket after the one that came with the smoker warped due to use.

    We're glad to have you. The search bar at the top is your most valuable resource here. This forum has been around for over ten years, so there is a good chance that any questions you may have, have already been answered (they may have 10 different answers, but you'll get an instant response non the less).
    Please be sure to post your smokes along with your process and recipes. We will be glad to help you along the way and we may also learn something new ourselves in the process. Also, don't forget the very important Q view! (We're mad for pics on here 😁)

    About anything you wanna know about smoking/grilling/curing/brining/cutting or slicing
    and the list goes on has probably been posted. Remember to post a QVIEW of your smokes.
    We are all smoke junkies here and we have to get our fix. If you have questions
    Post it and you will probably get 10 replies with 11 different answers. That is
    because their are so many different ways to make great Q...

    Sorry it took me a few days to get back online but here is the loin that I did.  It took about 3hrs and 20mins to hit an IT of 158. I then wrapped it with foil for 40 minutes, which was as long as I could keep my wife out of it. I tried to keep the temp in the smoker about 220 but it wavered a couple of times.  I was pretty happy with it.  I could really taste the apple juice that I soaked it in (that may have been in my head though).  I thought I got a decent smoke ring on it and this was definitely the most tender that I have ever gotten a pork loin.  I was actually able to pull a little bit of it.  While it was wresting I threw a couple ears of sweet corn on the grill and I thought they were nice with the smoky flavor but they had a real bitter after taste to them.  Has anyone else ever had that happen to them?

    Kyle, welcome from SC. Really nice pork loin. Looks very juicy. I'm sure you will enjoy this site more now that you have joined.
