Wanted to stop in and say hi. I have been lurking here for a while and thought it was time to introduce myself.

I hunt and have always has the interest in smoking, but just thought it took too long. I don't have the lifestyle that allows me to stand a babysit a smoker for 6 hours. I have gotten more time lately and have realized that it doesn't have to be as difficult as I once thought.

I am now trying to decide what kind of smoker to purchase. I have even thought of building one just to see if it will get use. By the time I build one I could have invested the same amount of cash into a little Brinkmann. Now the only question is wether to get the electric or wood. I am thinking of getting the wood smoker. I have a hotplate and could always rig it up if I wanted to try it.

I love to cook and make jerky. Some of the stuff I have seen here had really got me thinking and joansing for a smoker. I have completed the 5 day course and am currently taking all suggestions for a first economical smoker.

Glad to be here and hope to be able to share a success story soon.[IMG]

Welcome to the site. What kinda of smoker your get depends on what you want to smoke and how much you want to spend. The brinkmanns are good. There is alot of good reasonably priced smokers out there.

    Welcome to the site!
THe ECB is a good cheap choice and few can be found cheaper.
I picked up a new ECB at Walmart for $30 called the Smoke n' Grill.
With a few cheap mods this thing becomes a truly excellent smoker.
You might look around a bit and see if you can find a used one for less.
At $30 though you can't go wrong.

Big Howdy to ya Big E and welcome to SMF! If you haven't decided yet, think of getting a used Weber Kettle (less $ while deciding). Great smokers ( yeah, they grill too)! I have a used one that's used for small, single item smokes. Only thing I did was replace the original grate with one that has the two lift up sides. You put the meat in the middle, and coals on each side, in the kettle. Works really well. Also added a thermo in the lid.

Anway, again, welcome and enjoy the place as much as we do!

Thanks for all the kind words. I went out today and did some recon work. Looks like I can get a Brinkmann bullet for about 50 bucks at Lowes. I have a few of thouse handy gift cards (thanks kids) left from xmas so it looks like I can get this done on the cheap. I need to review the mods and see what needs to be done. Maybe I'll have her runnin by this weekend. Think I'll start with a chicken. Will keep you posted. Thanks again. BIG E

Yep that's the one I was lookin at. They have the red electric and the green charcoal grill. The electric is around 70 bucks and charcoal is 50 or so.

I figured if I wanted to use it as a electric smoker than I could add my hot plate and give that a whirl.

My wife bought me a Char-Griller Super Pro Charcoal Grill/Smoker last year (without the firebox) and I took it back to he store. I know... I know... I just wasn't ready to head down that smoky road. I looked the the overall size and it just looked like overkill for my needs.

Question... It's freezing here in KY right now. How will the cold weather affect my smoker? Yes, i know the answer is out there, but since I was here....

i was smoking in 9* weather just last weekend........

WIND is the biggest enemy........wind steals heat...........cold can/is overcome...............

you will need to make some mods to that smoker......they are on here........get it.......give a heads up......and we all will help

but yea......you can even buy the electric element from brinkman to PUT in that charcol brinkman........but your hot plate mite werk just as well.......
