hello from colorado

  1. Been smokin for about a year currently have a master forge vertical smoker. Really like to try anything from ribs to fish and pork butt. Cant seem to develop a good smoke ring. I use my apple and peach tree for wood. Any help would be greatly received!

    Welcome to SMF. Is your MF electric, propane, or charcoal?

    Good question David! If it's electric you won't get a smoke ring, but no big deal you can't taste the ring anyway!

    If you didn't read the Terms of Service notes.....please do.  There are a few things that everyone should know about those pesky little rules before plunging into the forums.   7. Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. My smoker is a propane but can also use charcoal which I've been thinking about using. Thanks for the tip on electric never knew you couldn't get a smoke ring with them.

  11. @davidheff88 I only filled my water pan with play sand to help maintain temp. I tried putting on a rope gasket but after a couple uses it just fell off. With the smoke ring problem, Maybe its the amount of wood I put in there? I usually put 4 or 5. 1 inch by 2 in round wood chunks in a total of 3 times. Maybe just do one or two big piles instead of spreading it out? Also gonna ask if you've experimented with using charcoal in it how it came out.

    I haven't tried any charcoal. I usually add 2-3 of the same size chunks every hour for the entire time I'm cooking. I got my gasket from a fire place store. It has a self-stick backing on it. I have had it on over two years with no problem.

  14. good to know. we dont have any local fireplace supplies stores here in the small town of pueblo... but thats what the great wide web is for. ive been thinking about a rubber gasket. seems like it would be a better seal.

  16. @boardpuller. Right on had no idea ive never actually been into Ace. ill go check that out! is there any gasket that i should get over the other??

    The flat self stick one I have works great. If you get too thick you may have trouble latching the doors which would require a mod to the latch mounts on the unit.
     
  18. I tried the self stick on a fire box didn't hold To hot had to use gasket sealer should work on a CLEAN door.
