Hello all. My name is Brandon & I've never smoked a piece of meat before in my life. But I've just recently finished building and burning my first barrel smoker. I'm super excited about it. I think I've bit of more than I can chew though. I've committed myself to smoking four butts on the new smoker this weekend. Lol. I figured i'm a pretty smart feller so I started researching good tips for smoking and found this blog. Signed up immediately. I'm really looking forward to the feedback, been very pleased so far just browsing. have a good rest of the week, and happy fathers day.

Welcome neighbor!  Four butts is a good load to start off with, but there are answers to any issues you may have right here on SMF. Be sure to let us know how it went (we love pics) .

I'd like to do a testrun with something simple on the new smoker. Any suggestions? I'd hate to ruin that much meat the first run. but Its to late to back out. I'm Supposed to smoke the butts Saturday, but I'll have tomorrow and Friday evening for test runs

so i've decided not to take on such a huge project for the first run. I Think I need work on my smoker more anyway. I'm starting to question my design. I pretty much have a UDS but wasn't fond of the upright design so I laid it down on a rack and cut a door into it and put a grill grate in half of it. Was planning on having the fire on one side and meat on the other. Will this work or am I going to need to fashion a fire box for it? I would have done it in the first place, just figured I didn't need that much grill space.
