My name is Trent, and I am in Northern Ohio (8 inches of snow yesterday and 50 degrees today)!  I have an offset Chargriller, and am thinking of getting the new MES-40.  Any thoughts?  I like the idea of the electric, as adding lump charcoal every 1.5 to 2 hours, on a long smoke gets tiresome.  I ran into this forum doing a search on smokers, and am glad I did!  I am on vacation next week, and if the weather stays managable, plan on smoking some shoulders or a brisket.  Will post some pics if I am able to cook...keeping my fingers crossed for the long range forcast.

Hello Trent, and welcome to the SMF. Good luck on selecting your new smoker, and be sure to season it before you actually use it on food. It's all good my friend.

Hello Trent - Welcome to SMF - I vote for the MES 40

Good luck with the search

Welcome Trent, With an electric MES you can sit in the house and watch your smoker cook great food. Snow? No worries.

Hey Trent Welcome to the Forum , I see you are thebreaddude ..... try this ....   http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/forum/thread/72049/camp-oven-white-bread-recipe

The weather here In Southern BC today is 48f and no snow left.

I have a MES 30" and love it. It is easily large enough for feeding 4-6 people but if you customarily feed more than that then you'd need the larger MES 40" . I have only the 30 because there are now only 2 of us at home , the kids have gone, yahooooooooooo!!!

The window in the door is handy but really not necessary. You should read up on the MES a bit because there are older models with smaller elements you might want to avoid. Get the latest model with the upgraded wire and burner and you will love the thing. It really is almost set it and forget it. You do have to keep the thin blue smoke going and make sure temps dont fall off but its really a piece of cake.

Welcome!!

If you get a MES you will love it.

Be sure to get an amazen unit to go with it!

( put "amazen" in the search tool up above.)

I have had an MES and they are a great smoker, but IMHO you will not get the same flavor as you will get in a charcoal/wood smoker. Since you are accustomed to that flavor, I would recommend a Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker. I have one & they are very easy to operate. Once you get to know them they will hold steady temps. for hours without any intervention. As far as having to add charcoal every couple of hours or so. I just smoked a pork butt for 19 1/2 hours without adding any charcoal or wood chunks. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the comments everyone.  Went out on Sunday and bought a MES 40 at Sam's.  Seasoned it yesterday, and guess I could not wait to try it out.  Made some moinks yesterday, and they came out great.  My amazen smoker should be here tomorrow, but today I am doing a london broil.  Thursday ribs or maybe a couple of shoulders...it has been a long winter!!!

So we have a saying here " no qview, it didn't really happen" since your new were going to let it slide but next time DON'T FORGET!!
