Just dropping by to get a start learning about the art of smoking.

Greetings. You most certainly found the right place. I would suggest you take Jeff's on-line 5 Day smoking course.
It kinda' depends how much money you wish to spend. You can spend as little as $100 bucks or so for a very basic unit to well into the thousands for a first line smoker.

Kinda looking to stay at or below about $400 for now. I have pretty good fabrication skills and thought about building my own but as of now I don't have the knowledge about smoking to know what makes one good or bad.

Welcome Rootex, you sure picked a great site to learn about this great passion we all share. Good folks, great recipes and amazing Qviews.

Welcome to SMF glad you decided to join us. You'll find lots of good info here on different kinds of smokers as well as lots of other stuff. Probably the first thing you need to figure out is if you want to use electric, propane, charcoal, or wood as your first smoker. I say first because many of us change or own several types once we get into smoking
