Good evening everybody!

Just joined up here after lurking for the past few weeks here and after all the reading i have done here and seen the wealth of info i thought... this is the place for me!

First of all i am from Alberta Canada and smoking is something i recently got intrigued by. I love bbqing, i used my bbq pretty much every other day even if its -30C out! but am looking to expand a little bit more here and gain some knowlege so once summer comes i can get into smoking. As i said i love bbq i cant get enough if it and when i do frequent you guys down there state side the family and i usually go hunt down those amazing bbq places you guys have and just binge til i cannot move hahaha.

After many hours reading on here and getting the 5 day e-course i have a few questions for you guys and am hoping you guys and gals could lend this canuk some advice. I have read on basically all the types of smokers but still cannot decide on one. I almost pulled the trigger on a 40" MES (see i learned that here) from cabelas the other day but realized from reading the thread about figuring out the different ones i believe it was a gen two i think i even read the thread with the whole list of model numbers and that model number wasnt on it (20075515). Then read about the issues the MES series have and figured i'd better step back and learn before a spend money. So now i am back to these thoughts....

I want a good reliable smoker that i am not going to use a handful of times and have it crap out on me.

Do not want the most expensive biggest baddest out there but definatly dont want the smallest cheapest there is i would like to smoke one of our 30 plus pound turkeys in it (i deep fry our holiday turkeys right now and my family and friends love it)

Electric, propane or pellet would probably be my best bet since a cant buy splits of hardwood like you guys can down there. So im limited to pellets or chips i dont even think i can buy chunks.

But lastly, as a tradesperson a farmer and growing up with oil patch all around i am pretty handy and can build pretty much anything. I get more satisfaction building something with my own hands that i can use and after looking at some of these mass produced units i can easily make one 100 times better ifi go that route and am just set on the right track. Plus after looking at all the awsome builts some of you have put out im almost temped to build a RF hahaha

I am getting a little long winded here i have a million questions for you guys and i am hoping to get to know a few of you and guide me into this great and delicious world you guys are in!

Welcome to SMF!

Glad to have you with us!

I was going to suggest a WSM 22.5, but if you can't buy wood chunks, then that's not really an option.

Sounds to me that your best bet is either electric or pellet, because you are going to want to use chunks in a propane smoker too.

There are a lot of choices in both of those categories.

I too was going to suggest a WSM 22.5. A turkey that size may be tight but it will certainly fit. Do not worry about not being able to access splits, as for the longer smokes good quality briquettes are more controllable and need less tending. The flavour is then added using either lumpwood or pellets of your choice. A 5 Kg load of restaurant quality hard briquettes will give you a 230 F smoke for 10-12 hours and chunks/pellets will give you plenty of flavour.

Thanks for the responses guys! If i were to go the pellet smoker route is there any certain ones that i should be looking at? Like i previously stated im not looking to break the bank here but a nice quality unit is a must. There are probably 4 or 5 stores around me that sell pit boss, camp chef and louisiana pellet smokers.
