Having trouble mounting legs to outside of smoker

The legs that came with my smoker are designed to be mounted inside the unit and have a "notch" for the body to rest on.

If I try to mount them on the outside, the unit cannot rest on the notch. Will the legs support the unit if the unit is not resting on the notches?

I'm thinking maybe some heavier duty bolts than the ones the unit came with should do the trick. If not, are there any alternatives to the legs my unit came with that I can pick up at the hardware store?

That looks like it could be a problem.  The Brinkmann Smoke & Grill's legs are held on with two nuts & bolts per leg, which adds stability.  It's a bit hard to tell from the photos, but you might not be able to add a second nut and bolt due to the design of your unit.  Not sure what your options are regarding replacement legs, but one option would be removing the legs and making a base with three cinder blocks arranged in a triangle.

Can't you just take a pair of vice grips and bend that tab out to a 90 degree angle? that would do it I think. A beefier bolt would not hurt anything though.
