Most of my posts consist of poor attempts at humour. My capability of novel recipes is limited, to say the least. Any questions I've had have been more than adequately answered by the experts by using the "Search" feature. If someone is too lazy to do a search, I'm sorry but I'm too lazy to respond to something that is very easily researched using "Search".
It is not the attempts which are poor but the humorist. But that's understandable in your case. Seeing the British spelling of "humor" with the extra "u"

What in the holy hell did I just read...
I did a riff on the phrase "poor attempt" by personifying it. You see, TardisSmoker wasn't to blame for the posts, the poor, lazy, good-for-nothing attempts were. I was removing the blame from Tardis and placing it on the attempts. My type of humor is based on taking things literally and just going absurdly downhill from there. I just envisioned the poor attempts as being living, intelligent beings who just needed to find work to being rich attempts. And then I thought of the types of jobs attempts would look for in the want ads. Simple as that. To me, the whole riff really had nothing to do with Tardis other than his inspiring it.

But I had to take a jab at Tardis spelling humour using the British version.

Sometimes I will see the topic, and it might say need help cooking brisket.
I will look at the question and it might say...I have a master built smoker. How long will it take to cook my brisket etc.
Well I have no master built smoker and never cooked on one, so I move on.
And sometimes questions are complicated and need multiple answers and I really don't have time to answer.
I do try and look at unanswered questions.
Very good answer. I do have a MES but as a OTBS member I will look at posts but only respond to the ones I feel I can answer. I just never think of how it adds to the number of Views because that doesn't concern me. I rarely go by stats, which includes checking for how many total Likes I have. Since I only allot myself a limited time on SMF my primary interest is in providing good info when I can.

So I viewed this thread because I was curious...but...
Sometimes I'll view something because I've had a similar question or I'm curious about what to do "if" a similar situation arises.
I've found that almost always there are more than adequate replies to a question and I've got nothing good to add...
And, I'm more likely to view stuff I'm not familiar with and read the responses to broaden my knowledge base.

Like a lot of people, I'm sure, I read a lot of posts on subjects that I know absolutely nothing about, hoping to gain some knowledge.  Learning something new is never wasted.  That said, I would never even think to add my 2 cents to the discussion--that would be kinda like a truck driver jumping into a discussion on nuclear physics.  I can safely use the truck driver analogy 'cause I R One.  LOL.

While I may not contribute to the discussion, hopefully I WILL learn something new.  It's not rudeness or lack of interest that keeps me from replying, simply courtesy.

No worries, Ricksta. I see where you're coming from. We just need a heads up before delving into semantics and Platonian step by steps to appreciate dry humo(u)r.

As far as I'm concerned, if I read a post asking a question and there are plenty of answers I move on, having learned a little bit more. I try not to answer if I've not had enough experience about it to give an opinion. I've pulled my foot out of my mouth too many times....

Thanks, SmokeyMose. Many times my humor doesn't translate into verbal, let alone print. I just love wordplay and framing words or phrases in unique ways. I might think of posting a disclosure before diving into the next one, though.

And I do the same thing. My self-proclaimed area of specialty is electric smokers and I also search for the unanswered questions or ones with limited responses. And sometimes I don't check the posting date so I'll go to read a question that was first posted in 2012 and there are 10 pages in the thread. I'd much rather handle a question posted that's at the most a few days old, especially if it's an issue I can help with and no one else has posted a reply.

Pretty much everybody at SMF is considerate and answer a question when they can. The number of Views verses Responses mean little. The site is here to participate in both learning and teaching when you can. Occasionally we get a member who gets very upset if they get very limited or no responses. This situation benefits from a simple response like, " l can't help you but hang in there, someone should be by to help..." Or even just a word or two recognizing the post. Both of these bump the thread back to the main page where it is more likely to be seen. Keep up the good work and help when you can...JJ

With the bumping thing, that's why threads started years ago show back up on the main page? I had wondered about that since I've never quite gotten a handle on the bumping things. But no matter. I credit SMF with turning me from a guy with a brand new smoker who knew nothing about smoking to an OTBS. I have learned so much here. My beloved daughter bought me seat in a BBQ class in Seattle a few years back and, while it was an incredible time, most of the information and techniques I employ in smoking I learned here. Members like yourself, Bearcarver, the blessed Scarbelly, and others got me where I am now. And that's why it's such an honor to be an OTBS and to give back to other members.

Thank you...As far as Bumping goes, l look as the post date and only bump stuff that is a few days old and got no response. Chances are with stuff that is several years old, the author is either long gone or found an answer by another means...JJ

That is an excellent point.  I am sure it is frustrating to get no answers and probably feel abandoned.  I never thought of it that way so, as you said, even a simple acknowledgment would be good.  If nothing else it may start a conversation that could end up with some answers/assistance.

I have only had a few smokes on my wsm over about 3 years now. Wish I had more time. That being said, I'm still such a newbie that I read and learn from a lot of posts but don't comment because don't have the knowledge.

I "view" a lot of posts ecause it's a great learning tool...if after reading the comments I'll only reply if I've got something helpful to add that hasn't been covered already...one thing I really don't want to do is read a thread that has 49 "yup, I agree with..." comments.
And since EVERY question I've personally viewed has been addressed adequately, many times by more than one member, I don't see the number of views vs the responses as being an issue...
It'd be different there were a hundred views and the issue wasn't addressed but that simply doesn't seen to be the case.
Just my 2¢
Walt

Something I have noticed here, as well as on other forums, are that the amount of "views" far outnumbers the number of replies. Surely, many who view have an opinion or an answer they could post that might be helpful to the op.  Just seems strange to me.
