Had an idea

     We are having a community Rummage/Yard sale here in the neighborhood on Friday and Saturday were quite a few ppl come to browse. Several of the residents on a few of the avenues all get together so its kinda of like a community thing.

    The wife is selling quite a bit of old clothes and toys that the kids have outgrown and this is the 5th or 6th year that we've done it so if history repeats itself there will be quite of few people coming by.

    I had a thought a couple of hours ago - What about smoking a couple of pork shoulders and a rack or two of ribs and fixing up some rolls and baked beans and selling boxed lunches for the two days?

    Has anyone else ever tried selling their food like that? I know that when people have sold baked goods they have done well so I was thinking heck why not try to sell some barbecue for like $5 a plate for some extra side money.

    Also, I've wondered about the idea of going around once a week to all the local business people in town asking if they'd be interested in buying a boxed barbecue lunch for Friday at Noon or something along those lines. Maybe include a couple of side dishes and a small dessert and a canned drink for say $6 a box or whatever I figured a good price would be. Maybe do like pulled pork one week then ribs the next then brisket after that or something.

    Thoughts, concerns, or advice? I figured nobody better to ask than the pros. Thanks.

    I don't know about WV but in PA, Baked Goods and non hazardous foods are allowed but Meats and anything that can give you food poisoning , requires an inspected commercial kitchen for production, a Business License, ServSafe Sanitation and Safety training and a Butt Load in Liability Insurance...Some clown with a good lawyer and a claim that he got sick from your food and you will no longer have a place to live unless you buy your house back from him! It's not worth the couple of hundred bucks you may make...JJ

  6. Same here in Maryland. A friend of mine got busted selling hot dogs at her paintball field. She was told she could only sell prepackaged sandwiches.

    Thanks for the input guys. Thats why I thought I had better consult yall first. I guess the same would apply with street vending during local festivals?

    If you plan on cooking the food from your residence, some towns require temporary business permits. Ours requires one just to hold a yard sale.

    It's not sad at all. I kinda like the idea that everything I purchase to eat has to meet rigorous standards. Let's say the OP (and don' take this the wrong way, I'm just using you as an example) was perfectly free to sell pulled pork at his community yard sale. Then let's say he goes to Costco and gets 2 of those 2 packs of pork butts. On the way home, he remembers he forgot to ask his neighbor to help, as he's been pretty sick lately and he hadn't seen him. He sees his neighbor's truck outside outside the VFW hall, and goes in to quickly ask him to help out. While he's there, they get to talking about the poor guy's persistent cough and generally shooting the breeze. Next thing you know 3 hours have gone by, and the OP excuses himself to go home and prep for the big event. On the way home, he makes one more stop at the local garage to make an appointment to get his AC recharged as it's been out and the weather has been brutally hot.

    The next morning, his smoker's acting balky and won't get up to temp. But our OP is a smart guy, and put the meat on at 3am to allow a couple extra hours for the 6pm event. Good thing too, because at 9am the internal temperature of the butts is only 120˚. He figures it must be because he injected it, something he'd never tried before. Right about then the neighbor shows up, poor bastard. He's in pretty bad shape, coughing constantly. Our hero doesn't want him to have to deal with people, so he puts him out back manning the pit.

    Call me crazy, but I'd kinda rather not have one of those pork sandwiches.

    A few weeks back the neighbors across the street had a garage sale. The kids set up a lemonade stand. We bought a our family a round of drinks as did the other neighbors. About a hour into the sale the CITY stopped by to shut down the lemonade sales... Things are out of control...

     I guess you can't sell apples on the street corner from your back yard without a tax number either!
