Hello everyone,

My name is Jewell and I am somewhat new to the forum. I have been very impressed with the information, resources and input from forum members regarding the great hobby of smoking. Not being a pro... I have much to learn and look forward to continuing my research while trying to improve my skill level.

Right now I use a Outdoor Seasons Hiland HIL3041-SMK BBQ Smoker With Side Firebox Grill and have a few questions. Most pressing, how can you maintain a consistent 250 degree temperature with a smoker that has no temperature gauge? Very frustrating at times...

Thanks again to everyone for making this forum such a great source of information. I am very excited to be a member.

Welcome aboard, Jewell!

Here is a little gadget I rigged up for use with a wired thermometer probe.  Two pieces of 1 X 2 joined with a screw to swivel.  Three holes for the probe at varying heights.  One of these on each side of the pit will give you a good idea of your temps.

Good luck and good smoking.

To SMF We are glade your here.  If you already haven't check out the 5 day e-course on smoking. It's chuck full of great info, even for veteran smokers it's a good read. Smoking Basics 5-Day eCourse

As to how to monitor temps with out a temp gage. Get your self a digital probe thermometer place probe threw a potato and place it on the grate. I do like the suggestion on the probe holder mentioned above, going to make myself 1. I have a gage on my smoker but the probe is much more reliable.
