Greetings from Ohio

  1. Hi Everyone,

    I'm from NW Ohio. I'm really not very good at grilling, smoking, etc. But I'd sure LOVE to learn! We have a cherry tree in our yard that died last year. Haven't had a chance to get it taken down yet. Someone suggested to me this week that I could use the bark and branches to put in my grill and smoke some things. What do you think? Any good suggestions for me? What kinds of meat? How do I do it? (I have a gas grill, by the way).

    I'd appreciate any input you have!

  5. Welcome to SMF...........[​IMG]...I don't know about smoking the bark, but cherry wood is my favorite to mix with hickory, oak and mesquite....Maybe some else can chime in on the bark burning portion of your question...[​IMG]

    Make sure you dry the wood good before you use it. Cut it up and split it and it will dry fast.........

    Howdy, margies3!

    Welcome to SMF from someone who's been here only a few months.  You will find no better place to learn.

    As for your cherry tree, I don't have a clue what to recommend.  I think the recommendations might depend somewhat on the equipment you are using and the results you are looking for and the kind of meat you are cooking.  Many years ago when I first got beyond grilling meat on a briquet fire, the first thing I tried was cracking hickory nuts from the tree in the back yard (lived in NC at the time) and sprinkling them over the charcoal before putting on steaks and closing the lid on the unit.  That simple act got me started but I didn't really get into smoking much until late last year when I bought the MES40 at Sam's.

    If you are using a charcoal grill, there are lots of different ways to make smoke.  While I was at WallyWorld yesterday, I saw a little metal smoke box that I might go back and get for use with my grill.  I use the AMNPS with the MES, but I'm thinkin' that a smoker box might give me 'smoke' options for grilling that I haven't yet explored.
